There’s something about lighting a candle that instantly makes a home feel warmer and more peaceful. But because candles release their ingredients directly into the air, what they’re made from matters.
Most conventional candles are made with paraffin wax and undisclosed synthetic fragrance blends. As they burn, candles release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), soot, and fine particulate matter into the air. Research confirms that scented candles can measurably affect indoor air quality, particularly in smaller or poorly ventilated spaces. Many of the fragrance formulations used also contain phthalates – chemicals associated with interference in estrogen, androgen, and thyroid hormone signaling.
This doesn’t mean you can never enjoy a candle again. It simply means the ingredients deserve the same attention we give our cleaning products, skincare, and food.
What We Look for in a Cleaner Candle
We prefer candles made with transparent, thoughtfully chosen ingredients, such as:
- Beeswax or coconut wax
- Essential oils or carefully screened, phthalate-free fragrance
- Untreated wood, cotton, or hemp wicks
- No paraffin, synthetic dyes, or unnecessarily vague fragrance blends
Even cleaner candles produce some particles because combustion is still combustion. Trim the wick, avoid burning candles for hours at a time, and open a window or provide ventilation when possible, especially if someone in your home has asthma, migraines, chemical sensitivities, or difficulty tolerating fragrance.

The company designed it specifically to help reduce airborne mold and mycotoxin levels as part of a broader environmental protocol.
Wild Capri
Wild Capri uses coconut-apricot wax, wood wicks, and a blend of essential oils and screened aroma ingredients. Its candles are free from phthalates, parabens, and ingredients listed under California Proposition 65.
One Small Swap for a Healthier Home
Low-tox living doesn’t require removing every comforting ritual from your life. It’s about paying attention to the products you use often and choosing better options when you can.
If you love lighting a candle while you clean the kitchen, take a bath, or wind down in the evening, switching to a cleaner-burning candle is a simple way to support healthier indoor air, without giving up the cozy atmosphere you love.
